Banking · Product Ownership · Building my own fintech products

Hi, I'm B. Sivasagar.

Twelve-plus years in Mid-Corporate banking and Agile product ownership. I build platforms banks can trust, and in my own time I ship money tools for Indian households.

A career built across two disciplines that rarely meet

Most product managers learn banking second-hand. Most bankers never own a backlog. I've sat on both sides of that table: underwriting credit files and running sprint backlogs with the same scrutiny.

Further down is work I did inside a bank or a client team. These are different: products where I picked the problem, scoped it, built it, priced it and put it in front of real users myself.

EMI-Free Date Planner · MapMyRupee

Founder & PM

Salaried Indians with two to four loans prepay on instinct, because bank calculators handle one loan at a time. I built a planner that compares loans side by side, shows which to close first, and gives the exact month you become EMI-free. Launching on SuperProfile, October 2026.

Read the case study

The problem. A household with a home loan, a car loan and a personal loan gets a bonus. Which loan should it go to? Bank calculators answer for one loan at a time and ignore prepayment charges, so people guess.

Key decisions.

  1. Scoped v1 to 3–4 loans and three prepayment styles: extra each month, extra EMIs per quarter or year, or a fixed yearly lump sum.
  2. Modelled Indian fine print: prepayment charges as a percentage or a fixed fee, with GST.
  3. Shipped two formats, a web planner and a Google Sheets / Excel version, because users split between "just show me" and "show me the formula."
  4. Launched one product first and held the follow-on (where spare money should go if not prepayment) for a second release.

What users told me. Early testers found it useful but hesitated to pay, since free calculators and AI tools exist. Rather than cut the price, I'm adding features that justify ₹199.

Brand. Dropped a crowded first name after checking every channel, and chose MapMyRupee so the handle is identical on Instagram, LinkedIn and Facebook.

Auction It Out · player auction app

Builder & PM

A web app for running an IPL-style cricket player auction: agree the rules, load your own player sheet, and auction players live against a countdown that resets on every bid. It stops any team from bidding in a way that would leave it unable to complete a valid squad. I shared v1 widely, people loved it, and their feedback is shaping what comes next.

Read the case study

The problem. Friend-group and league auctions run on a spreadsheet, a phone timer and someone shouting bids. Purses get miscounted, and teams overspend early and can't fill their squads.

Key decisions.

  1. Rules are agreed up front and lock once bidding begins: participants, purse, bid timer and squad rules such as minimum bowlers and all-rounders.
  2. Tiered bid increments that mirror real auctions (for example +₹5 L up to ₹1 Cr, then +₹10 L), configurable by the organiser.
  3. Purse protection: a team can't spend so much that it can't complete its minimum squad, and the app explains why the bid button is disabled.
  4. Bring your own players: a forgiving Excel/CSV import that understands "2 Cr", "50 L" and role short forms, flags bad rows instead of failing, and checks there are enough players for every team before you start.
  5. Scoped v1 as one human team against simulated rivals, to test the feel of a live auction before building full multiplayer.

Internal tool

Suppliers send new stock as WhatsApp photos and messages, and turning them into store listings was the daily bottleneck for my ethnic-wear store. I built a browser tool that reads product details from photos with AI, applies fixed SKU, pricing and collection rules, and creates products in Shopify or exports a ready-to-import file.

Read the case study

The problem. Each supplier batch arrives as images with prices and fabric details buried in text overlays and chat messages. Uploading by hand was slow, and inconsistent tags quietly broke the store's collections.

Key decisions.

  1. Human in the loop, not full automation: for each product I choose whether the description comes from a category template, text read from the image, the WhatsApp message or my own notes.
  2. Rules as requirements: a fixed SKU convention (vendor, fabric, work type, date), pricing rules, and a closed list of product types and tags that matches the store's collection rules.
  3. Two paths by batch size: small batches go straight into Shopify through its API; batches of 50–100 go through a CSV import.
  4. Consistency at the source: automatic photo normalization so products from different suppliers look uniform.

Along the way. Traced a recurring Shopify import error to a missing product category when certain attributes are filled, and made the tool warn before it happens.

Navinook · navinook.com

Founder, D2C

I run Navinook, a Shopify store for women's and kids' ethnic wear sourced from regional suppliers. I own everything from catalogue structure and pricing rules to the site's conversion review, which is how I learned what a product backlog feels like when every item costs your own money.

About

The banker who learned to ship

Twelve-plus years, five organisations, and one recurring habit: reading the whole board before committing to a move.

Chapter one

Corporate banking

Underwriting Mid-Corporate credit, structuring treasury solutions and advising CFOs taught me to read the position fully before acting, because the cost of a bad move in banking is never abstract.

Chapter two

IIM Calcutta and the pivot

The MBA sharpened the strategy side and set up a deliberate move into Agile product ownership. The discipline stayed the same: backlogs instead of balance sheets, sprints instead of settlement cycles.

Chapter three

Product ownership, today

I read credit files and sprint backlogs with equal scrutiny, building onboarding systems, data governance and GenAI tooling designed to survive a compliance review. Outside work, I build and sell my own products.

How the work gets done

An approach carried over from banking

Read before you move

Full requirement and stakeholder analysis before a single epic gets written, with the rigour of underwriting a credit file.

Data before conviction

Decisions grounded in reconciled data and financial modelling, not assumptions. A habit from treasury and risk work.

Build for scrutiny

Platforms designed to survive an audit, not just a demo, informed by years of regulatory and compliance exposure.

Plain communication

BRDs, dashboards and exec updates written so technology, business and compliance teams read the same reality.

Experience · 2011 to present
